Jonathan Mostow’s The Surrogates is a transfixing cyborg based movie that finely moulds the human craving for thrill with the crude fear of fatality. A beguiling movie tapping into the sharp disparities of the make-belief world of surrogates and the repulsive grisly reality and how unexpectedly a rebel anti-surrogate element crops up that leads to a human-on-cyborg clash.
Set in a futuristic world wherein people live a secluded existence as they control and manipulate automatons from the secure settings of their abodes, taking pleasure in every reaction their seemingly perfect android surrogates generate, till abruptly matters take a twisted turn when a murder takes place, that jerks this utopia initiating a quest for sanity in a world of facades.
FBI agent Greer (Bruce Willis) and his associate crime solver Radha Mitchell in the pursuit for answers get enmeshed in the inexplicable fatality of a college goer who had been associated with the person responsible for creation of surrogates.
Greer eventually discerns the enormous scheme underlying the surrogate occurrence and is compelled to discard his own surrogate, jeopardising his life to unearth the mystery as he attempts to salvage the situation alongside accomplices’ crusty Ving Rhames, Boris Kodjoe and James Francis Ginty.
