Folk writer and songwriter Donovan has been given the title of “Icon” at the annual London awards ceremony organized by BMI. Organizers praised the 63-year-old legend who gave hit songs in a row during his career including Mellow Yellow and Jennifer Juniper for transforming music in 1960’s.
Singers joined an elite lists of past BMI winners included are Bryan Ferry, Ray Davies, Peter Gabriel, Van Morrison, James Brown and Dolly Parton. BMI organizers described Donovan as a man of unfathomable talents. He was one of the first folk rock stars and had been on seven UK top 10 hits in between 1965 and 1968. Donovan said after receiving the award that it is a very special honor because very few fortunate are entitled for this award. He added saying it is a very beautiful honor and title especially not for the records sold, not for looks and not for the best dressed man. This award is for song making, that is a wonderful excellence, and he was very proud of himself during the award function. Natasha Bedingfield’s Pocket Full of Sunshine released in UK won the song of the year award. Songwriter for this track Bedingfield was Danielle Brisebois. Awards were won for songs including Estelle’s American Boy, Duffy’s Mercy and many more were included in the list. Bollywood music composer AR Rahman won the music award for Slumdog Millionaire. Certificates were presented for songs played more than three million times on US radio and television.
