Dame Vera Lynn Veteran singer received a lifetime achievement award at the 54th annual Women of the Year lunch. 92-year-old who trumped last month became the oldest living artist in the world to have a number one album and became the oldest living artist to top the UK album chart.
We will Meet Again the very best of Vera Lynn hit the top spot which mean she seized Bob Dylan as the oldest artist to grace the position. Her album outsold artists including Arctic Monkeys, JamieT and The Kings of Leon and even defeated The Beatles a much hyped editions. Award was presented from classical music star Katherine Jenkins. Artist Tracey Emin, Broadcaster Esther Rantzen and TV presenter Fern Britton were also present at the London event. Last month she urged pop stars to do more to support British Troops by entertaining them on the front line. Awards are nominated by the Women of the year Council currently chaired by singer Joan Armatrading and Maureen Lipman, Mary Nightingale, Virginia Wade and Glenys Kinnock. Lynn is famous for best known for her recordings of We’ll Meet Again and White Cliffs of Dover. Dame Vera began her professional career at the age of seven, singing and dancing in working people’s club. She joined a dance troop at the age of 15 to begin her singing career and began performing with household names such as Billy Cotton. She was well established as a singer by the time of Second World War.
