Sacha Baron Cohen who portrays ‘Bruno’, the lead character, is essentially a would-be type who goes to crazy lengths to achieve stardom. At the weekend box office, the movie has left even the Fox’s ‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs’ behind that hauled $28.5million and stands second in line now. Paramount’s ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ took third position, after hogging pinnacle post for two weeks in a row, with a domestic sum of $339.2million, surpassing the Transformers 2007 movie total of $319million.
‘Bruno’ out ran the opening weekend sales of $26.5million of Baron Cohen’s unexpected hit in 2006, ‘Borat’.
The distribution head at Universal studios, Nikki Rocco, stated that they are adopting a wait and watch approach to see how this wacky comedy works its way.
Though reviews of Bruno seemed not quite at par when compared with Borat, a looming doubt was whether Baron Cohen’s ostentatious gay character might not prove to be a snag.
Bruno racked maximum capital in West and East coasts as compared to Central America. If one takes a hypothetical picture that the revenues keep on plummeting, Bruno is still slated to garner revenues for Universal Studios that has shelled out $42.5million for its distribution rights. Bruno has already racked in $25million from overseas till now.
Ironically, ‘Bruno’s started out big on Friday with $14.4million, but profits took a plunge on Saturday with $8.8million and on Sunday it further dipped to $7.2million.How long can Bruno manage to stay at top is to be watched out for.
