Oscar-winning director Scorsese, with an irrefutable repute of churning out trepid packed dramas in all his ventures, is back with the intensely psychosomatic ‘Shutter Island’ which stays true to the widely acclaimed Dennis Lahane’s novel with the similar name. Lehane aficionados can expect the similar scale of sullenness, anguish, air of suspense with an unruly finale in the upcoming movie too. Scorsese ventures into the scare-thriller territory after nearly 15 years of his last spooky movie ‘Cape Fear’.
The story initiates in 1954 with Leonardo DiCaprio who plays Marshal Teddy Daniels and U.S. marshal Mark Ruffalo played by Chuck Aule are called upon to probe the baffling disappearance of a crazed slayer from a mental asylum hospital which is remotely located in an island off the Massachusetts coast. Despite the humongous fortification of the Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital, the patient vanishes into thin air. Teddy is only too pleased to accept the task as he had long been trying to get a job at the island for personal grounds. But as he dwells deeply into the affairs and working of the hospital, he is overwhelmed by baffling veiled truths that spanned immoral, illicit and ominous practices being followed. As he tries to clear the fog off these facades, he receives considerable flak from the hospital authorities who snub his recurring requests to review hospital records.
Matters go out of hand as a gale creates utter mayhem in the area, with the perilous criminals taking undue advantage and making a hasty getaway from the hospital premises. As dubious inklings surmount, Teddy starts getting increasingly apprehensive about a lot of matters involving his reminiscence, sagacity and most of all, his close associate, Mark whom he immensely trusts.
Ben Kingsley effortlessly delivers his sheer acting prowess in this movie. Leonardo DiCaprio’s remarkable roles in numerous movies like The Aviator, The Departed, Gangs of New York to site a few, carts on in this movie too, as he delivers Oscar-worthy performance. To top it off, grand talent brigade like Max von Sydow and Mark Ruffalo make it a significantly anticipated movie.
Scorsese brilliantly taps into the spine-chilling ambience of the movie with recurring shots of ghoul sightings of a lady adding to the eerie factor.
Thanks for the nice review!
Just a corrective note: It’s not “Chuck Aule” who plays Mark Ruffalo (*g*) but the other way round.
the original shutter island was a good movie in my opinion. Waiting for this one to come in october.
