Cast: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman
Genre: Drama, Comedy
‘Funny People’ is Apatow’s third directorial venture into dramedy after belting out noteworthy comical movies like ‘Knocked up’ and ’40 year old virgin’. Apatow treads into new-fangled terrain as he attempts to deliver a seriously comical movie with an emotional reverberation.
Adam Sandler, who can add a legitimate touch to anything ridiculous, resurges after his last impressive performance in ‘Punch Drunk Love’. Adam dons the role of a famed slapstick comedian, George, who has an implausible, dismal discovery that he has a life-threatening disease with limited days in hand.
Seth Rogen plays Ira, an upcoming, mawkish novice in the same field still trying to find his roots. Ira has grown seeing George starrer movies and worships him. George notices Ira who happens to be performing in the same club at the time and decides to take Ira as his apprentice-cum-assistant with the desire to develop genuine camaraderie.
Leslie Mann plays the love interest of George, with the prime hitch being she’s married to Eric Bana. Jason Schwartzman, the music composer of the film, dons the role of a television celebrity on a sham show ‘Yo Teach’.
Several memorable vignettes from the likes of Owen Wilson, Elizabeth Banks, Norman MacDonald, Musician Jon Brion, Sarah Silverman, Dave Attell make for some truly engaging moments. Ansari’s miniature scene literally pilfers the show and can be considered as one of the best parts of the film to be looked out for. Even rapper Eminen has reportedly mentioned about his brief appearance with Adam and Seth in the movie. Novice Aubrey Plaza does seem to garner significant interest with her over-the-car make-out session with Seth Rogen.
George’s endearing quest for love and life are to be looked out for in this humorous movie.
